How To Grow

  1. Select a Container: Choose a container that is 10-12 inches deep and has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
  2. Choose Dill Varieties: Decide whether you want to grow common dill (Anethum graveolens) or dwarf dill varieties suitable for containers.
  3. Prepare the Container: Fill the container with well-draining potting soil. Dill prefers soil with good drainage.
  4. Plant Dill Seeds: Dill is best grown from seeds. Scatter the seeds evenly over the soil surface and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil.
  5. Water the Soil: Give the soil a good watering after planting to ensure it’s evenly moist. Water regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
  6. Provide Full Sunlight: Place the container in a sunny location where the dill will receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Dill loves warmth and sunlight.
  7. Thin Seedlings: Once the dill seedlings emerge, thin them to about 6 inches apart to allow room for growth.
  8. Fertilize Sparingly: Dill doesn’t require heavy feeding. You can fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  9. Mulch the Soil: Apply a thin layer of organic mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, around the dill plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  10. Harvest Regularly: Harvest dill leaves and seeds regularly to encourage continuous growth. You can use the leaves fresh or dry them for later use in cooking, and the seeds can be used as a spice.
