How To Grow

  1. Select a Container: Choose a container that is at least 6-8 inches deep and has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
  2. Choose Oregano Varieties: Decide whether you want to grow Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) or Italian oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. gracile). Both are suitable for container gardening.
  3. Prepare the Container: Fill the container with well-draining potting soil. Oregano prefers soil with good drainage.
  4. Plant Oregano Seeds or Seedlings: If planting seeds, sprinkle them evenly over the soil surface and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. If using seedlings, plant them at the same depth as they were in their nursery containers.
  5. Water the Soil: Give the soil a good watering after planting to ensure it’s evenly moist. Water regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
  6. Provide Full Sunlight: Place the container in a sunny location where the oregano will receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Oregano loves warmth and sunlight.
  7. Fertilize Sparingly: Oregano doesn’t require heavy feeding. You can fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  8. Mulch the Soil: Apply a thin layer of organic mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, around the oregano plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  9. Harvest Regularly: Harvest oregano leaves regularly to encourage continuous growth. You can use the leaves fresh or dry them for later use in cooking.
  10. Watch for Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids or spider mites, and treat them promptly if necessary. Oregano is generally resistant to most pests and diseases.
