Module 8: Buying Necessary Garden Tools
You don’t need a lot of tools for growing vegetables in containers. Here’s some tools that might be useful.
List Of Some Essential Tools
Garden gloves: These are useful to protect your hands from dirt, scratches, bugs while you tend to the container plants.
Trowel: I call this the best container gardening tool as it can be used for digging, sowing, removing weeds, adding compost and fertilizer, and mixing soil.
Watering can: This is useful when you have several plants in your garden to water. It is gentle on the plants compared to using a hose.
Pruners: A useful tool that helps you prune unwanted plant parts such as dried branches, diseased parts. It is useful when harvesting vegetables as well.
Labels and markers: It often happens that we plant seeds and forget what we planted. Labels and markers can help identify the plant you’re growing.
Bench: It might be useful to place your container vegetables on a bench as it’s easier to maintain the plants. You won’t need to strain your back while bending to reach the plants.
Where To Buy Them?
You can get these tools at any of the typical stores such as Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot. Some of them you’ll find at local nurseries and garden centers.
Here are my recommendations:
Garden Gloves: G&F Women’s Gardening Gloves
Trowel: Garden Guru Trowel
Watering Can:Kensington London Watering Can
Pruners: KeShi Pruning Shears
Labels: Mziart Plastic Plant Labels

Precautions When Using Tools
It’s best to clean the tools such as garden gloves, pruners, trowel before using them near the plants. You want to prevent pests and diseases from reaching the plants.
You can clean the soil from these tools and sterilize them using rubbing alcohol. Just wipe the tool with rubbing alcohol and it should be fine.
It’s good to clean the tools after use and wipe any debris. If you use water, wipe that off so the tools don’t rust.
Action Steps
- Make a list of garden tools that you will need.
- Check if you already have them or buy them from a store.
