BLACK and DECKER LPP120 Cordless Pole Saw Review

It’s important to prune the branches of your trees for their health, growth, and protection from disease.

But a pruning saw is not the best tool for the job when you have to trim those hard to reach branches. A pole saw is a much better choice because it’s safer and convenient to use.

And a cordless pole saw is a better option than a gas pole saw when you’re doing the occasional pruning. That’s because there a cordless pole saw has low maintenance, no refueling worries, and no air and noise pollution to deal with.

In this review, let’s take a look at the Black+Decker LPP120 cordless pole saw which comes with a 20V battery.

What is the cutting capacity?

The Black+Decker LPP120 cordless pole saw comes with a 40V battery and a 1.5Ah charger.

This makes it slow for charging and it can take around 3-4 hours for the battery to fully charge. We recommend buying a better charger that has 2Ah or more amperage so that charging the battery takes less than an hour.

The performance is pretty good considering it is a cordless electric pole saw. The specification suggests the motor can trim about 100 of 1-½ inch thick branches.

This pole saw has an 8-inch bar and chain which means that you can trim up to 6-inch branches with it.

What is the pole reach?

The usable length of this pole saw is from 6.5 to 10 feet. So you can get an overhead reach up to 14 feet.

This is a good length to reach the tall limbs of trees in your garden.

How good is the durability?

This pole saw has a shaft with a maximum extension of up to 10 feet. The chain is good quality steel and should last you for a while.

And you can trust the Black + Decker brand for holding up to a good quality tool.

How are the bar and chain?

The BLACK and DECKER pole saw has an 8-inch bar and chain. This helps you trim branches that are up to 6 inches in diameter.

It even cuts branches up to 7 inches thick but that can be a bit tedious.

The design helps to lower the chances of kickback that has the potential to cause injury.

Is the design good?

The LPP120 has an over-hand handle that gives you a good grip. The handle is coated with rubber as well.

This makes the grip comfortable to use for a long period of time without feeling fatigued. And you won’t risk dropping the pole saw and suffering an injury.

The pole is made from hollow fiberglass that makes it durable and light.

The pole has a maximum extension of 10 feet. But it’s not a telescopic type of pole. This is one thing I don’t like about this pole saw because you have to attach a separate part of the pole to extend it.

This pole saw does not come with an easy adjustment tensioning system. It does come with a wrench that you can use to tighten the chain before using the pole saw.

Is the pole saw lightweight?

The Black+Decker LPP120 is a cordless pole saw that comes with a 20V Lithium-Ion battery. It is very light as it weighs just 6.3 pounds.

So you should have no problems carrying it around in your backyard when you need to do a lot of pruning.

The weight of the pole saw is well distributed on both ends so it’s well balanced and you should not feel any problems when holding it high and cutting branches.

Other pole saws like the Greenworks have more weight on the cutting end which will make you fatigued the more you hold the pole saw.

Does it have an automatic oiling system?

Unlike many other cordless pole saws, the Black+Decker LPP120 does not come with an automatic oiling system which is a bummer.

It comes with a small plastic bottle that you need to put the oil in and drizzle over the bar before and periodically during your pruning work.

It does make the pole saw system less complicated and you don’t have the problem of leaking oil in storage. But it just adds a bit more manual work for your trimming.

Does it come with a detachable head?

This Black Decker pole saw does not come with a detachable head.

This means you can’t use it like a chainsaw but it does make the pole saw well balanced with the design.

What are the noise levels?

The noise levels of this pole chainsaw are quite low. But it’s always good to have ear protection when using such tools.

Does it need a lot of maintenance?

The pole saw divides into three pieces: the pole saw holding end, the middle pole extension, and the cutting end chainsaw. This makes it easy for storage.

The best thing about an electric battery-operated pole saw is that it requires low maintenance unlike a gas pole saw that has an air filter and gas tank.

As you already know, this pole saw does not come with an auto oiling system. So you need to ensure that before and during the pruning you drizzle oil on the bar.

After a lot of use, it is possible that the chain will get dull and you’ll need to sharpen it.

A sharp one will help you trim faster, easier, and improve the life of your pole saw. If you know what you’re doing you can sharpen the chain yourself or get the help of a professional to do so.

With the best maintenance, you can get this pole saw working for years to come.

What are the safety features?

The LPP120 is easy to hold for a lengthy period of time. This is because of its lightweight design. And the comfortable rubber over-hand grip.

So you won’t have the risk of losing control of the pole saw when in use and dropping it to cause injury.

This pole saw has a large power switch that you need to keep pressed for it to work. It stops immediately when you release the switch. This gives you a good safety design.

How much is the warranty?

The Black Decker pole saw comes with a limited two-year warranty on parts and labor for manufacturer defects.

Is this pole saw expensive?

The Black+Decker LPP120 pole saw is a pretty popular cordless pole saw even if it lacks some features available in other ones. It makes it up with its efficient cutting and maintenance.

We don’t find much of a difference in price when compared to pole saws like the GreenWorks 20672 and the Poulan Pro 967044201. Which puts this pole saw in the budget price category of battery-operated pole saws.

Customer Reviews

There are plenty of customers that give the LPP120 a positive thumbs-up as a usable pole saw in the garden.

Customers like it as a budget pole saw that is easy to use and maintain.

The issues some customers have had are that the battery charging takes some time. And it’s inconvenient to not have an automatic oiling system.

Should you buy the BLACK and DECKER LPP120 Cordless Pole Saw?

We think it’s a viable choice as a cordless pole saw that is inexpensive and gets the job done.

If you’re looking for a well-balanced pole saw that is lightweight and easy handling, this is a great choice.

It does have some flaws like a weak battery and a lack of an automatic oiling system. They’re not major but something to consider for your decision.
