How To Grow

  1. Select a Container: Choose a pot or container that is at least 6-8 inches deep and has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
  2. Choose Basil Seeds or Seedlings: Decide whether you want to start with basil seeds or seedlings. Seedlings provide a quicker start, while seeds offer more variety options.
  3. Prepare the Container: Fill the container with well-draining potting soil. You can mix in some compost for added nutrients.
  4. Plant Basil Seeds or Seedlings: If planting seeds, sprinkle them evenly over the soil surface and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. If using seedlings, plant them at the same depth as they were in their nursery containers.
  5. Water the Soil: Give the soil a good watering after planting to ensure it’s evenly moist. Water whenever the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  6. Provide Adequate Sunlight: Place the container in a sunny location where the basil will receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Basil loves warmth and sunlight.
  7. Fertilize Occasionally: Basil doesn’t require heavy feeding, but you can fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  8. Pinch or Harvest Regularly: Pinch off the tips of the basil stems regularly to encourage bushier growth. You can also harvest leaves as needed for cooking.
  9. Watch for Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids or whiteflies, and treat them promptly with organic insecticidal soap if necessary. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases.
  10. Harvest Frequently: Harvest basil leaves frequently to encourage continuous growth and prevent flowering. You can use the leaves fresh or dry them for later use.
