How To Grow
- Choose a spot with full sun for your pea plants. They thrive in 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.
- Select a container that is at least 8 inches deep, but preferably deeper (up to 18 inches).
- Peas like to climb, so provide them with something to climb on. A trellis or tomato cage works well.
- Some favorite types of peas for container gardening include:
- Sugar snap peas
- English peas (varieties like ‘Little Marvel,’ ‘Tom Thumb,’ and ‘Early Frosty’)
- Snow peas
- Use a good-quality potting mix. If your potting soil doesn’t already contain fertilizer, add a general, all-purpose formula. Peas don’t need much fertilizer, so be cautious not to overdo it.
- Peas prefer cool conditions. Plant them early in the season for a plentiful harvest.
- Plant the pea seeds about 1-2 inches deep and 2-3 inches apart in the soil.
- Keep the soil consistently moist. Peas don’t like to dry out. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage excessively.
- Keep an eye out for pests (such as aphids) and diseases. Regularly inspect the plants for any issues and address them promptly.
- Peas are ready to harvest within as few as 55 days from germination. Pick them when they are plump and sweet, straight off the vine, for the best flavor
