Module 3: Choose The Vegetables You Want To Grow
This is an exciting step because you get to pick which vegetables and herbs you want to grow. You can grow almost any vegetable or herb in a container. There are a few that might be a bit more difficult to grow than others.
List Of Vegetables To Grow In Containers
Here’s a list of vegetables and herbs you can choose from.
| Tomatoes | Lettuce | Radishes |
| Peppers | Spinach | Carrots |
| Cucumbers | Kale | Onions |
| Zucchini | Cabbage | Green Onions |
| Eggplant | Bok Choy | Beets |
| Beans | Swiss Chard | Turnips |
| Peas | Mustard Greens | Sweet Potatoes |
| Okra | Arugula | Garlic |
| Corn | Cauliflower | Potatoes |
| Pumpkin | Broccoli | Oregano |
| Basil | Brussel Sprouts | Sage |
| Parsley | Celery | Dill |
| Cilantro | Collard Greens | Lemongrass |
| Mint | Rosemary | |
| Thyme | Chives |
My advice would be to start with 1 or 2 vegetables or herbs otherwise you might get overwhelmed. Start growing a few and you’ll gain the experience and confidence to add more to your garden later.
Choose Vegetables That You Enjoy
I recommend growing vegetables and herbs that you enjoy growing and eating. That will help you stay motivated and excited as you grow them.
Ask yourself the question, “What vegetable would I love seeing in my garden? What vegetable would I love to eat fresh from the garden?”.
Pick Vegetables Suitable For Your Climate
Check that the vegetables you want to grow are suitable for the climate of your area. Vegetables will need different temperatures to germinate and grow well. Some are warm-season vegetables and some are cool-season ones.
I’ve created this information for all the vegetables and herbs that you can find below:
Container Plant Information List
Warm-season vegetables: These will grow in the Spring/Summer months when the weather warms up. They are not able to survive the cold weather and frost.
Cool-season vegetables: These will grow in the early Spring/late Fall months when the weather is cool. They are not able to survive the heat of summer. Some of them might even survive a few nights of frost.
For any vegetable you want to grow, go to the list and check the temperature it needs to grow well. Then check the temperature of your area when you want to grow them.
Action Steps
- Make a list of the vegetables and herbs you want to grow.
- Research the climate and temperature the vegetables and herbs would need.
- Find out the climate and temperature of your area for the year.
- From the list of vegetables, plan to grow the ones that are suitable for your area.
