How To Grow
- Container Selection: Choose a container with a depth of at least 6-8 inches and sufficient drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. A width of 12-18 inches is suitable for accommodating multiple spinach plants.
- Soil: Fill the container with well-draining potting mix or a blend of potting soil and compost to provide adequate nutrients.
- Variety Selection: Select spinach varieties suited for container growing, such as ‘Bloomsdale,’ ‘Tyee,’ or ‘Baby Leaf.’
- Location: Place the container in a location with partial shade to full sun. Spinach prefers cooler temperatures, especially during hot summer months.
- Planting: Sow spinach seeds directly into the container, covering them lightly with soil. Alternatively, transplant seedlings, spacing them about 4-6 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water spinach regularly, especially during dry spells, to prevent bolting (premature flowering) and bitterness.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the spinach plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
- Fertilizing: Spinach is a light feeder but benefits from occasional fertilization. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer or compost tea every 3-4 weeks.
- Harvesting: Harvest spinach leaves when they reach the desired size, typically 4-6 inches long. Use scissors to cut outer leaves, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing for future harvests.
- Succession Planting: To extend your harvest, sow seeds or transplant new seedlings every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season.
